- Mark your center height: Measure the height of the headlight center (often marked by a small dimple on the housing) from the ground. Transfer this exact height to the wall with a mark.
- Set your target marks: Create two more marks on the wall. On the driver’s side, mark a spot 4 inches below your center mark. On the passenger side, mark a spot 2 inches below the center mark.
- Identify the cutoff: Turn on your low beams. Look for the “cutoff” line, which is the sharp horizontal boundary where the bright light ends and the darker glare zone begins.
- Adjust the beam: Turn your adjuster until the top edge of that cutoff line sits at or below your marks. A common target is to have the cutoff land about 2 to 4 inches below the headlight center line at that 25-foot distance.
- Verify: Re-check the cutoff against your wall marks after every turn until it lands exactly where it should.
Finding and turning the adjusters on your vehicle
The adjuster’s job is to move the reflector or projector up and down inside the headlight. While the location changes, the process is similar.
If you have a BMW F30, look behind the frame rail. On an F-150, look for a tube on top of the headlight assembly. On a Dodge, the screw is usually mid-housing.
Once you find the hole, insert your tool and turn it slowly. Watch the light pattern on the wall as you work. For example, on some BMWs, turning counterclockwise will drop the cutoff beam down toward your target line. Because every car is different, you’ll need to test which direction moves the beam in the direction you want.

LED / HID bulb swaps — extra checks
If you are upgrading from old halogen bulbs to bright LEDs or HIDs, you must be extra careful.
A brand-new, bright bulb can actually expose aiming errors that your old, dim bulbs were hiding. If your aim was slightly too high before, a bright LED will make that error much more obvious to oncoming drivers, leading to more people flashing their lights at you.
When you swap to these brighter lights, use the “rear-window rule” as a quick field check: try to keep your beam pattern below the rear window or deck-lid line of the car driving in front of you. This helps ensure you aren’t blinding other drivers.
When to stop DIY and visit a shop
The wall method is great for most drivers, but there are times when you should call a professional.
If you live in a state with very strict safety inspections—like Utah, which has specific tolerances for horizontal and vertical beam position—you should follow their official charts. If you cannot recreate a perfect 25-foot, level-ground setup at home, your DIY readings won’t be accurate. In those cases, a shop with professional equipment is the safer bet.
Remember: before you pay a shop to adjust your aim, double-check that your new bulbs are actually seated correctly. You don’t want to pay for an adjustment that a simple reseat could have fixed.
