Always-on vs switched — what it means
You pull the key out, step away from the truck, and glance back to see the blue light on your FM transmitter still glowing. That adapter was plugged into an always-on 12V socket. This article tells you how to tell whether your car’s sockets are always on or switched, and how to match each device to the right circuit.
Vehicle manufacturers wire their auxiliary power sockets in two main ways. An “Always-On” socket maintains a constant 12-volt connection straight to the car battery, whether the engine is running or the key is in your pocket. That constant path creates a real battery-drain risk. The socket gives electricity a way to leak out continuously.
A “Switched” socket is different. It only receives power when the ignition is in the Accessory or Run position. Once you turn the car off, the circuit breaks and the power cuts out automatically. This setup is much safer for preventing accidental battery drain.
Keep in mind that even modern cars have a “parasitic draw.” This is the tiny amount of electricity (usually 50–85 mA) that the car’s own computers use while parked. Which devices need which circuit
Choosing the right circuit depends entirely on what you plan to plug in.

Adding an always-on circuit safely
If you need constant power for a dash cam’s parking mode, you can add your own circuit using an “add-a-circuit” fuse tap. This tool lets you piggyback into an existing fuse slot without breaking the original circuit.
When using a fuse tap, follow these steps:
- Remove the fuse from the slot you want to use.
- Place that original fuse into the lower slot of the tap.
- Put your new accessory fuse into the upper slot.
- Insert the tap into the slot.
Orientation is critical. Power must flow into the pin that is opposite the long output wire. If you install the tap backwards, the power will incorrectly flow through both fuses.
For a standard hardwire kit, remember the wire colors:
- Red: Connects to constant (always-on) power.
- Yellow: Connects to accessory (switched) power.
- Black: Connects to the vehicle chassis ground.
Since most dash cams pull under 1 amp, a 2A or 3A fuse is plenty. Some manufacturers ship them with a 5A fuse, which is also perfectly fine.
Adding a switched circuit when your vehicle has always-on
If your car came with an always-on outlet but you want it to turn off with the key, you can often convert it with a simple wiring change.
Always-on outlets are typically connected to the battery (often called “30 power”) via a 15A fuse. Switched outlets connect through an ignition-triggered relay (often called “15 power”).
Some vehicles allow you to flip this setup just by moving a fuse. For example, on a 2014–2023 Chevy Silverado, you can relocate a fuse in the dash panel to change an outlet from always-on to key-only. Similarly, on VW MQB-platform cars, the sockets are switched by default. Moving the 20A yellow fuse one slot over can make them always-on.
Tools and wiring for a hardwire upgrade
Before you start any electrical work, gather the right kit. You will need:
- A digital multimeter or circuit tester.
- An add-a-circuit fuse tap that matches your vehicle’s fuse type (micro, mini, etc.).
- 14–16 AWG stranded automotive wire (red for positive, black for negative).
