You just picked up a Tesla, you open a shop page for a floor liner or a phone mount, and half the words in the listing look like code. Highland. HW4. Juniper. Data port. NACS. It is not obvious which of those words decide whether the part fits your car.
Getting one of them wrong is what turns a cheap accessory into a return label, a rattling trim panel, or a Sentry Mode recording that never happened. This guide explains the Tesla accessory shorthand you actually meet at checkout, in plain words, so you can read a listing and know what you are buying.

These two words do more work than anything else in a Tesla listing. “Highland” is the 2024+ Model 3. “Juniper” is the 2025+ Model Y. They are refreshes, not trims, and they changed the parts of the car that accessories touch.
Because of that, a “Model 3” label on its own tells you very little. Look for “Highland,” “2024+,” or “post-October 2023” in the title or the fitment chart before you buy anything shaped to the cabin — organizers, mats, screen protectors, seat covers.
The same care applies to screens. On the 2025+ Model Y Juniper the display is 15.4 inches unless it is a Performance model; Performance models and later 2026 builds use a 16-inch screen. A protector cut for one will not fit the other.
Fitment: the word that means “we checked your exact car”
Fitment is the maker’s claim that the part was designed for your specific model, year, and refresh. A custom-fit part is shaped around known dimensions and mounting points. A universal-fit part is made to cover many cars, usually with adjustable brackets or edges you trim yourself.
Neither label is a guarantee on its own. Universal does not mean it will sit flush, and custom does not mean it is safe if you skip the retention clips or block a control. Read the fitment chart, then check clearance around screens, pedals, the gear selector, and trim.
Build dates matter too. Some frunk mats are cut for Juniper builds and others for cars made before February 2025, so check your build date rather than the model year alone.
HW3, HW4, and the certified-hub problem
HW3 and HW4 are hardware generations of the car’s computer and interfaces. Most soft accessories do not care. Powered ones sometimes do.
Console USB hubs are the clearest case. For 2024+ Model 3 Highland and 2025+ Model Y Juniper you want a Hardware 4 (HW4) certified hub for the centre console. Hubs sold for the 2021–2023 Model 3 and 2021–2024 Model Y will not fit the newer Highland or Juniper console designs.
If you plug a hub the car does not recognise into the console, the usual symptom is not a dead hub. It is a flickering screen and a “USB Device Malfunction” message on every startup.
Data port vs power-only port, and the dashcam port
This is the term that costs people footage. Not every USB port in a Tesla moves data. Some only supply charging power.
On 2024+ Model 3 Highland and 2025+ Model Y Juniper, the three USB-C ports in the centre console are for charging only. The port the car uses for dashcam and Sentry Mode recording is the USB-A port inside the glovebox — that is what the official manual states. Rear USB ports, on every model tested, are for charging only.
Port shapes also drifted over the years. Older Teslas often use USB-A in the console; newer ones use USB-C. Some 2022 cars dropped data capability on the console ports altogether, leaving them as charging ports.
So when a listing says “for dashcam storage,” check which port it plugs into. A drive in a power-only port will charge nothing and record nothing.
Sentry Mode: a built-in feature, not an accessory
Sentry Mode is the car’s own parked-surveillance feature, using the existing cameras and computer. It is worth knowing its limits before you buy accessories around it.
Sentry Mode only works while parked. It records at 1280x980 — between 720p and 1080p — captures no audio, and stores no GPS or speed data. It can also draw down the 12V battery enough that the car dies after roughly two days parked. Owners report corrupt or unplayable files as well.
An aftermarket dash cam is the separate-device route: usually 4K or 2K, continuous recording while you drive, audio, GPS coordinates, and parking modes that survive days or weeks instead of hours.
MagSafe: the mount pattern, and what it needs from your phone
MagSafe is the magnetic mount-and-charge pattern on recent iPhones. In a Tesla it matters because Tesla’s vents are narrow horizontal slits rather than standard grille slats, so ordinary vent clips have nothing to grip. The common answer is a MagSafe mount that attaches behind the centre touchscreen, and many of those fold flat when you are not using them.
Two things follow from that. The mount is magnetic only, so you need a MagSafe-compatible iPhone or an Android phone with a MagSafe adapter ring. And charging speed depends on certification: only official Made-for-MagSafe chargers deliver the full 15W, while generic magnetic chargers often cap at 7.5W.
Vent-mounted MagSafe options exist but are generation-specific. Tesla’s vent designs changed across generations, so a vent mount cut for one refresh will not clip into another.
OBD adapter and CAN bus: reading the car, and upsetting it

NACS and J1772 are connector shapes. NACS is the Tesla-style connector; J1772 is the standard AC connector used by most non-Tesla EVs in North America. Both describe the plug and pin layout, not the charging speed.
Adapters bridge the two, and direction matters. For DC fast charging you need either a NACS to CCS1 adapter or a CCS1 to NACS adapter depending on your car’s port, so check your model year before ordering. The EPA lists three main DC fast-charge port types — CHAdeMO, CCS, and NACS — so confirm which one your car actually has.
Body and interior protection: frunk, sub-trunk, PPF
The frunk is the front trunk. It is its own shape, and liners for it are sold separately from rear trunk mats. Some Model Y listings also refer to a sub-trunk, the well beneath the main cargo floor, which is a third separate part.
PPF is paint protection film, a clear film applied over paint and exposed surfaces. On the Model Y it comes up often because the car has no traditional front grille, so the paint, headlights, and light bar take direct road impacts. Pre-cut front kits are the usual form.
